Daan Roosegaarde’s glowing Van Gogh cycle path to open in the Netherlands

This stunning illuminated bike path in Nuenen, Netherlands was just unveiled tonight by Studio Roosegaarde, an innovative social design lab that has risen to prominence for their explorations at the intersection of people, art, public space, and technology; most notably their research with Smart Highways that could potentially charge moving cars or intelligently alert drivers to hazards. The swirling patterns used on the kilometer-long Van Gogh-Roosegaarde Bicycle Path were inspired by painter Vincent van Gogh (who lived in Nuenen from 1883 to 1885), and is lit at night by both special paint that charges in daylight and embedded LEDs that are powered by a nearby solar array.

Bring Solar Powered Light to Africa

Africa is beginning to see a new light. A solar-powered light that is. Currently 598 million Africans live off the grid in rural Africa. Many of them still use kerosene lamps to light their homes, a practice that can consume up to 20 percent of each family’s income and is harmful to both the environment and the health of the families.

To help solve this problem SunFunder and SunnyMoney have stepped in with solar power. Together, they are working to move Africa beyond the age of kerosene lamps and into the solar future. But what are these organizations, and how do they work?

SunFunder is a crowdsourcing solar energy initiative that links donors–like you–to solar businesses–like SunnyMoney–in an effort to offer affordable solar energy to the 1.3 billion people worldwide without reliable electricity. SunFunder allows donors to select the cause they want to support, collects the donations, and then loans the money to the solar company doing that work. The solar company invests the money and earns a profit. That profit is returned to SunFunder and ultimately the original donors.

The World’s Largest Solar Plant Started Creating Electricity Today

Take 300,000 computer-controlled mirrors, each 7 feet high and 10 feet wide. Control them with computers to focus the Sun’s light to the top of 459-foot towers, where water is turned into steam to power turbines. Bingo: you have the world’s biggest solar power plant, the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System.

Long-mired by regulatory issues and legal tangles, the enormous solar plant–jointly owned byNRG Energy, BrightSource Energy and Google–opened for business today.

AWA Project Update – Bushwick Inlet Park

PROJECT BRIEF:

Given the urban nature of this project, it was critical to understand its context, and assimilate the local dynamics of usage patterns, circulation and night-time activities. In working with the architects, we decided to pursue an unconventional approach to this project, since the genre of such projects is usually driven by light levels first and then everything else. We decided to make light levels our last check, and work on composing the elements of this project into a wholesome, evocative and exciting night-time space that engenders and enables the community to link with each other. The results have been gratifying. The lighting solution to this environment- combining wayfinding, patterns and rhythms of lights, and highlighting the architectural massing with strong geometric lighting moves has elicited a very positive response from the community.

Lightly Solar Powered Clothespins Illuminate City Streets

Designers idan noyberg and gal bulka have designed the ‘lightly’ clothespin, a sustainable twist on an everyday item that lights up the cityscape in a sea of vibrant colors. By simply securing the cloth pegs to hanging garments on the street, an internal system autonomously shines at night. each clasp has a small solar panel attached to the top of its clip, which collects sunlight throughout the day. By dusk, a sensor supplies a tiny battery pack with the cue to turn on, automatically illuminating the LEDs in color. The intelligent twist on an ordinary household chore adds a visual contribution to the streetscape while maintaining an environmentally friendly design.

Betaray Spherical Glass Solar Energy Generator by Rawlemon

Last year, german architect andré broessel of rawlemon presented designboom with his spherical glass solar energy generator concept in its early prototyping stages. Developed as a stand-alone power charger station for electro-mobility, the project uses the advantageous strategy of implementing a ball lens and specific geometrical structure to improve energy efficiency by 35% when compared to existing photo-voltaic panels. By combining symmetrical and transparent spherical geometry as a concentrator lens and emitter, the unique dual axis tracking system can be fully incorporated into any building surface, improving existing efficiency and offering up to 99% transparency.

In addition to increased and optimum solar performance, the design offers benefits for users, designers and architects,’ explains broessel. ‘unlike any existing solar technology, the design and its dematerialized aesthetic permits high transparency and full building integration with no weather impact, due to its dual axis tracking system. The design allows the possibility to connect both standard and hybrid collectors in order to convert electricity and/or thermal energy, offering a scalable, reversible, self-sufficient system.’

Solar-Powered LED Lighting Pavilion in Michigan

London-based art and design studio loop pH have developed ‘the SOL dome’, a fully responsive lighting pavilion in michigan. The honeycomb-shaped structure is assembled onsite from thousands of individual circles woven from composite fibers, extending through space with its hollow lightweight constructing. Measuring 8 x 4 meters and weighs just 40 kg, the ‘SOL dome’ is illuminated by a circular matrix of solar powered LEDs. The portable structure is animated; it interacts and adapts to its environment, similar to a plant and its surrounding ecosystem. The rotational breathing rhythm of light is driven by an onsite CO2 sensor – the underlying geometry and construction technique of the dome is based on chemical and molecular bonds between carbon atoms. When each fibre is bent into a circle, it charges the LEDs like a battery, creating a controlled energetic structure.

Abhay Wadhwa Speaks at PLDC 2013 in Copenhagen, Denmark
Abhay Wadhwa, AWA’s Design Principal, has been invited to speak at Professional Lighting Design Convention (PLDC 2013) in Copenhagen, Denmark on October 31 2013.

He will speak on “The Impact Of Culture And Climate On Lighting Systems.” A given culture’s position in the global economic development cycle is often reflected in its use of lighting in urban, night environments. Striking a balance between regional differences of culture and climate, and globalization is often a challenge. Abhay’s talk will examine the variations in lighting, concepts, and solutions in response to the local culture and climate.

This biannual convention is a 3-day event to bring the professional lighting and design worlds together. Architects, designers, lighting professionals, researchers, universities, industry, developers, and clients will be in attendance. PLDC is a platform to meet, learn about the latest developments in lighting design, and discuss the future of the lighting profession.

Recently Completed AWA Project: NYC Parks Department Cuts the Ribbon on Bushwick Inlet Park
The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation cut the ribbon on its newest and greenest facility, an innovative 15,500 square foot multi-use building serving North Brooklyn’s waterfront. Designed by Kiss + Cathcart Architects, this wedge-shaped structure seamlessly draws the adjacent park up onto its roof to create a new public landscape looking out to the East River and the Manhattan skyline. Solar Technology Sheds Light on Africa

Kenya – A charity group, Solaraid, is trying to resolve the problems encountered by using kerosene as a fuel for lighting in Africa.

According to the World Health OrganisTION (WHO), inhaling kerosene fuel every night is equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes in respect of health.

Solaraid has developed a light that can be used as an alternative to kerosene.

Pippa Palmer, MD of Solaraid says “These lights use the very best of PV technology, battery technology and LED technology, and theyre pulled together into one contained unit. They’re made to immensely robust standards.”

Bushwick Inlet Park Opens

The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation cut the ribbon on its newest and greenest facility, an innovative 15,500 square foot multi-use building serving North Brooklyn’s waterfront. Designed by Kiss + Cathcart, Architects, this wedge-shaped structure seamlessly draws the adjacent park up onto its roof to create a new public landscape looking out to the East River and the Manhattan skyline.

Bushwick Inlet Park is the first phase in transforming Greenpoint and Williamsburg’s industrial riverfront into a continuous strip of green space and public amenities. From 2008 to 2011 an empty parking lot between N. 9th and N. 10th Streets from Kent Avenue to the river was converted into a native riverfront landscape and multipurpose athletic field. The new building, as the final component, adds venues for both community programs and park operations.
