AWA Project ‘Ark of Return’ Unveiled at the UN Headquarters

On Wednesday March 25 2015, on the United Nations International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and Transatlantic Slave Trade, the ‘Ark of Return’ Memorial was unveiled.

The ‘Ark of Return’ Memorial will be on permanent display at the visitors plaza of the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This memorial honors lives of those who died as a result of slavery or experienced the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade.

AWA is honored be a member of this team, ably led by Rodney Leon of Rodney Leon Architects.

AWA Project Singapore Chancery Inaugurated

The Singapore Chancery is located in the east side of midtown Manhattan, two blocks away from the UN Headquarters in NYC. This seven-storey building houses the diplomatic offices of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Singapore to the United Nations.

The scope of our work included all areas of the building, while conforming to pertinent energy regulations and local NYC building codes. The lighting design for the facade was based on our analysis of the architectural intent- highlight dynamism while displaying clear solidity. We grazed the glass of the facade with a linear uplight, while the space behind was uplit with a cove, consistently on each floor.

There are few real-world solutions that successfully combine an understanding of the physiological effects of light with efficiency and aesthetics

As we grow older, our vision is reduced and the amount of light that enters the retina and tells the body what time it is decreases too. Add to that the many hours spent indoors once we’re no longer mobile, and the potential lack of adequate light in care homes, and it becomes clear that there is a gap of light intake that new lighting technology can attempt to fill. Lab tests have found that exposure to moderate intensity light in the morning changes the circadian system, bringing forward the onset of melatonin and therefore altering the sleep-wake cycle. In one study, two hours of light stimulation on two consecutive mornings using a blue short wavelength (470nm) LED advanced the onset of melatonin by over one hour.

Artist Uses Gehry’s Concert Hall as Canvas in LA Philharmonic Concert Series

The first week of December marked the beginning of the LA Philharmonic’s in/SIGHT concert series. The multimedia series will incorporate video images playing in sync with the performance, creating an immersive new way to experience the music for concert-goers. The first of these performances was the collaborative work of conductor Esa-pekka Salonen and artist Refik Anadol in an audio-visual rendition of Edgard Varèse’s Amériques. Using audio analysis and Kinect motion capture software to record Salonen’s movements while conducting, Anadol has created a stunning set of moving images that capture the very spirit of Varèse’s work. Trends Magazine Features Interview with Abhay Wadhwa

AWA Design Principal recently sat down with Home & Design Trends Magazine to talk about lighting, and how it is not merely a form of illumination but a tool for story telling.

You were initially pursuing architecture. What made you suddenly venture into light design?
As a young boy, I loved to create and had a knack for making things and that was the prime reason why I enrolled for architecture at the JJ School of Architecture in 1987. While I was in college, I was not a very focused student and was involved in organizing college shows and fests. There was this one particular students conference of architecture that I was organizing, Which had musicians coming and playing. Just before we were about to begin the man who was in-charge for the light and music needed some help and I volunteered to help him out to set the stage. So I climbed up on the catwalk and was setting up the lights and the moment I finished and the lights went on, I knew I wanted to venture into light design. In those few seconds I knew this is what I wanted to do. It was almost like an instant realization. Now when I look back, I still get goose bumps because I did not realize I was going to stick with it for this long but even back then I knew that I loved it.

What would you call as the turning point in your career?
The turning point would have to be my time at the Lighting Research Center at RPI in upstate New York. I moved to it after my time at University of Southern California. I had one year at USC and that was fun but this was real, a serious boot camp and I was working as a research assistant for my stipend and I was doing an unfunded thesis that was published in technical papers. This is what I wanted to do, I wanted to learn light design right down to the last bit, so that I could really craft it. Mark Rea, the director of my centre who is still a great friend, told me something very special once I finished the programme. He said, “When you came in, you were all over the place and we straightened you out.” Frankly, I don’t disagree with that. I was all over the place. They channelized me. From being a crazy kid who was doing everything, they straightened me out and I have no problem in accepting that because he was and still is one of the best vision scientists in the world. He once said, “If you are a good scientist then you need to design and if you are a good designer you need to know how the technical stuff works. You see that realization, left side, right side of the brain, that’s rubbish. I think both sides of the brain have to work with what I do. In architecture also it’s not about one side of the brain, the left side of the brain. If you’re really creating architecture, you can’t really do it without knowing the technical side. So in that it’s kind of bauhausian, like the Bauhaus School, that you need to know your craft. I have always been fascinated by the German and Japanese system of being apprentices in order to learn your craft.

What parameters do you take into consideration while executing your light design?
When I look at a space one of the first few things one would take into consideration would be of how one would approach it, where the poetry lies, where is the emotional connect and where is the science. Functionality is another important aspect. Also there needs to be a connect with the architecture and how to augment the light with it. So after the initial analysis, we start looking at is the focal points of a project. Light is not merely an illumination. It is a storytelling and an illustrative medium.

Hundreds of Interactive Butterflies Change Colors and Patterns by Smartphone

On the Wings of Freedom

For the Amsterdam Light Festival, which goes on from now through January 2015, Italian design studio Aether & Hemera have created On the Wings of Freedom, a radiant cloud of hundreds of butterflies that hover above the ground. The dazzling installation can be found along the walking route of the festival, at Wertheimpark. Visitors with a smartphone are welcome to change the lighting effects which means they can manipulate the colors and patterns of light.

The butterflies represent metamorphosis and freedom across all cultures. Essentially, this installation is about the transformation of a city, in this case, Amsterdam. As they state, “The city is a place where people can continuously be inspired, not only culturally but also socially; a place for ongoing change and progress. On the Wings of Freedom symbolizes this potential change and evolution.

“With our installation’s dynamic waves of colors we wanted to celebrate Amsterdam’s bubbles and buzzes of activities, thoughts and interactions.”

“The joyous flapping creatures in the Wertheimpark are not just a source of beauty and enjoyment, but also a request: keep the change coming. It’s what Amsterdam is all about. It’s been said that a butterfly can cause a storm. Leave it to these butterflies to cause a hurricane of light and creativity.”

UN Global Efficient Lighting Forum held in Beijing

Beijing hosted a global energy-saving forum from Monday to Tuesday, bringing together governments, the private sector, financial institutions and international agencies to reaffirm their commitment to implementing a worldwide transition to energy efficient lighting.

The Global Efficient Lighting Forum was spearheaded by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and inspired by the United Nations Secretary General’s Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative, which prioritized lighting as one of its five energy efficiency accelerators. Among the various measures, investing in efficient lighting instead of building new power plants is the cleanest, fastest and most cost-effective way to reduce climate change, the UNEP said.

UNEP estimates that replacing all inefficient on-grid lighting globally with innovative, energy-efficient alternatives would result in over 1,000 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity savings annually, which is equivalent to the annual use of India and the United Kingdom combined. This electricity savings is equivalent to over 120 billion U.S dollars in avoided electricity bills and the reduction of over 530 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

LED lighting and digital control systems are revolutionizing lighting services by delivering improved levels of energy efficiency to all sectors. If there were a global transition to LED, it would reduce electricity consumption by 1550 TWh worldwide, which could provide 1.5 billion household with electricity. Representatives attending the forum have reached an agreement to double the global rate of energy efficiency and make sustainable energy for all a reality by 2030.

The forum was hosted by the Global Efficient Lighting Centre (GELC)-UNEP Collaborating Centre, with support from China’s National Development and Reform Commission, Industry and Information Technology Ministry, and the government of Beijing Municipality.

Light Matters: Smart Flying Pixels Create a Floating Glow

Imagine luminaires that could fly and visualise new buildings or individually guide you through space. What would happen if you could even interact with these flying pixels? These concepts could be realised in the near future as the first prototypes and experiments are being introduced. Software-driven LED pixels combined with drone swarm technology provide extraordinary possibilities for inducing new forms of spatial experience. These luminous pixel clouds emerge as digital patterns, but at the same time they emanate a romantic quality with their unique star formations twinkling in the night sky. The first projects have shared a playful note, but laboratories such as MIT’s SENSEable City Lab, ARES Lab and Ars Electronica Futurelab have shown an intriguing future in urban design for guidance systems or envisioning real estate developments, as advances in battery technology and wireless control have opened new perspectives for a life with smart flying pixels.

In early april 2014, BMW invited Designboom to Munich for a sneak peek of the ‘vision future luxury’, a high-tech four-door saloon that foreshadows the company’s forward-looking fusion of exclusivity and innovation. emphasized in the concept is the precisely engineered exterior design with lightweight materials and refined interior craftsmanship, which seamlessly integrates the user interface and driving experience together as a whole.

‘The design of the BMW vision future luxury is the messenger of our philosophy of modern luxury, one in which innovative technologies play a key and vital role,’ explains Karim Habib, head of BMW design. ‘these innovations deliver a new, multifaceted luxury experience that spans intelligent lightweight engineering, innovative interior design and a radically new user interface design.’

The exterior design showcases the advanced study of aerodynamics and innovative lightweight engineering. the coupé style roofline and sloping boot lid, for example, significantly reduces drag. the facade of the BMW vision future luxury includes aerodynamic detailing such as an ‘air breather’ system at the rear of the front wheel arch, a C-pillar with internal air channeling, and openings in the rear apron which vent air from the wheel arches.

‘Innovative technology and modern luxury have always been an important part of BMW’s brand DNA,’ says Adrian Van Hooydonk, senior vice president BMW group design. ‘we use visionary concept vehicles like the BMW vision future luxury to show where we may be going with these themes in the future, and to give us new inspiration and motivation. the BMW vision future luxury – with its innovative technologies and with meticulous precision and quality in every detail – takes our thinking on modern luxury a logical stage further.’

New York-based architecture office REX has developed the conjoined headquarters of two middle eastern media companies. the brief from the sister organizations calles for two elegant structures that pay homage to traditional emirati architecture, while satisfying their programmatic demands. starting with a long slender precedent – approximately 100 m x 22 m (328 ft x 72 ft) – the design team seeks to simultaneously accommodate offices alongside smaller broadcasting and news studios.
