Zara Swings Record Lease Deal in Fort

Mumbai: A heritage building in the Hutatma Chowk area in south Mumbai will soon be the largest retail space in a high street for a foreign brand in the country.

In a deal touted as the biggest transaction of its kind in this segment, Zara, the Spanish clothing and accessories retailer, has taken on lease 50,000 sq ft carpet in Ismail building. Zara will pay around Rs 2.5 crore a month as lease rental to the building’s owner, Supariwala Exports. The deal works out to over Rs 450 a sq ft per month.

The four-storey Ismail building is near the ornamental Flora Fountain in the heritage Fort area. It earlier housed an office-cum-business centre. Now, the entire building will house the new Zara store.

Market sources said this is the largest high street retail space take up by an international brand ever in India.

The deal was brokered by global commercial real estate services firm, CBRE India. It refused to comment on the deal.

“This deal shows that there is a shortage of quality retail space in the country,” said market sources. “In Mumbai too there is a shortage of such space in malls,” they added.

A recent CBRE report said growing online sales will not deter retailers’ physical store expansion plans in 2016.

A study of over 150 major international brands based in Americas, Asia Pacific showed that while European countries dominate the target destinations this year, China is the top target market in Asia-Pacific region and the fourth most popular globally, with 27% of retailers looking to expand there.

Michael Candy Handcrafts Helical Kinetic Light s

Sculpture by Michael Candy

Sculpture by Michael Candy

Suspended within the walls of an old dockside warehouse in India, a creature waves its long arms upwards and downwards in a hypnotizing fashion. The plywood and metal body articulates 18 fluorescent tubes that radiate waves of light onto the surrounding architecture as they gently move around its spine. The overall effect is anamorphic, where the individual beams move as one, floating above the surface of the ground. Completed over the course of one month during the Kochi Artist in Residency program, this describes the work of creative mind Michael Candy called ‘Big Dipper.’

For the construction, the Australia-based artist collaborated with a local metal shop to craft some of the more complex metal components. These intricacies are apparent in the roller chains located along the main axis of the structure that move around the circumference of a steel circle located between every pair of bulbs. Their stability is ensured by two zip ties that connect back to the jigsaw-cut wooden modules following the rotation of the central helix mechanism.

Since the 1970s a Man Has Been Planting a Forest Larger than Central Park, One Tree at a Time

Jadav Payeng

Nestled in Northeast India next to the Brahmaputra River sits Majuli Island, a giant sandbar that happens to be the largest river island on Earth, home to some 150,000 people. It is also the location of the 1,360 acre Molai Forest, one of the most unusual woodlands in the world for the incredible fact that it was planted by a single man. Since 1979, forestry worker Jadav Payeng has dedicated his life to planting trees on the island, creating a forest that has surpassed the scale of New York’s Central Park.
