Defining Shadows and Darkness

“It is necessary to return to the point where the interplay of light and dark reveals forms, and in this way to bring richness back into architectural space. Yet, the richness and depth of darkness has disappeared from our consciousness, and the subtle nuances that light and darkness engender, their spatial resonance – these are almost forgotten. Today, when all is cast in homogenous light, I am committed to pursuing the interrelationship of light and darkness . Light, whose beauty within darkness is as of jewels that one might cup in one’s hands; light that, hollowing out darkness and piercing our bodies, blows life into ‘place’.”

– Tadao Ando (1990)

AWA Project Update 2014: Part 1 of 2

Annual update blue header-updated 7 pm

July 17th 2014
Vol. 12.1

Dear Friends,

It was 12 years ago this month at our first studio in SoHo, NY that a journey started, with a simple plan- do great work with integrity, innovate, be happy, and pay your bills. It has been an eventful 12 years with very few regrets. We have been fortunate to work across the globe in 22 countries and counting, with great clients and designers on inspiring projects.

At AWA, we are inspired by the following quote from Woodrow Wilson (1919):
“You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget that errand.”

Our heartfelt gratitude to all our friends for their support and continuing patronage over the years.

Stay tuned for another exciting project update in two weeks.

Sincerely,

Abhay Wadhwa

AWA Project Update – Cyber Hub – India’s New Hot Spot

PROJECT TEAM:

Client:    DLF

Landscape Architect:    M. Paul Friedberg and Partners

Architect:    Architect Hafeez Contractor

Lighting Consultant:    AWA Lighting Designers

Wayfinding + Signage:    Russell Design

Photographer:    DLF & AWA Lighting Designers

Cyber Hub Website:    http://dlfcyberhub.com/

PROJECT BRIEF:

The site is long and linear with multiple entrances and viewing points. In our analyses, it was critical to create definite visual nodes for visitor orientation and collection, that would then be connected by a lighting tapestry, creating a visually clean and crisp environment at night. The excitement of the store fronts will then lend an organic growth pattern to the site- combining the rigor of a well-planned night-time urban environment with the flavors of a local souk or bazaar- and resulting in a great architectural project that augments the sense of community and civic pride.

Stay tuned for more updates and images on this project. We will send out another newsletter in April after all tenants have completed their fit-outs.

Cyber Hub (AWA project) turns itself into leisure hotspot

Good architecture tends to be both a product of and a monument to the society as it exists in a given frame of time. The buildings of Cyber City, intricate steel and glass constructions, are exceptions to this rule. They seem to exist outside time, representing a distant future, and have little to do with contemporary Gurgaon. You get this out-of-Gurgaon feeling in its most striking form at the new corporate leisure centre called the Cyber Hub.
